“Although unlikely to be popular in Troy, we’re struggling to find Achilles’ Achilles’ heel.”
I’m not sure if I like software developer Realtime Gaming’s online slots. They tend to be a little cheesy, with cutesy music, and rather old fashioned graphics. There is an upside though: they pay – they pay well – and the Achilles online slot is no exception.
Based on the Greek hero of the Trojan war, and featuring a blond Helen of Troy, a wooden horse, a shield, the city of Troy, Mr Achilles himself, and what looks like a European football club pennant, Achilles is a satisfying online slot that could hold its own against a rampaging Trojan.
The story is that Achilles was dunked in the river Styx by his nymph mother Thetis. However, because she had to hold him by the heel, that part of his body remained vulnerable. Who would have thought you could learn so much from playing a few online slots?

The games symbols are all as above. The music is generic slots until you trigger the bonus round, when the Troy players take to the stage and bang out that rhythm on the drums. Gameplay is quick, clear, and simple.
The best winning combination is Achilles. Line up five of these and you pocket 10,000 times your line bet. Achilles is also the game’s substitute symbol. He also triggers one of the online slots’ two bonus rounds. The Troy symbol is the scatter and starts the other bonus round.
The Achilles bonus is triggered when three of more Achilles symbols appear. You are then prompted to select one of the Achilles symbols to reveal a mystery amount of free spins. I hit it twice during the review netting 15 and 20 spins respectively.
During the free spins, all the Troy symbols are changed Helen or Achilles and prizes are tripled. It’s a good one to hit. The Troy bonus round starts when you get three or more Troy symbols. Ten free games are awarded and all prizes are doubled. Both bonus rounds can be retriggered.
I should quickly point out that – like many Realtime Gaming online slots – Achilles features a random progressive jackpot. It is – as it says – completely random. If Lady Luck has got your number, who knows. At the time of this review, the jackpot was at a pleasant £2,865 and climbing.
Achilles is not the most exciting slot in the world. However, the bonus rounds seem to hit far more frequently than some of its competitors. If you like your online slots action without the frills, give this one a spin.
“There’s no other way of putting it: this game leaves me cold. I do have a real problem with a lot of Realtime Gaming’s slots. They have naff graphics and cheesy music and fail to excite. That said: the fact they are US facing means they often pay well.
If you’re a hardcore slots fan, the lack of ‘add on’ shouldn’t be a problem but – I like my slots with a splash of pizzazz!”
